About Us

The Union Carbide Condominiums embody the best parts of urban living in Downtown Kansas City. Situated on a quiet one-way street and nestled among some of the city’s most historic architectural landmarks, these boutique residences retain their lovingly restored Art-Deco façade and lobby, while creating a modern oasis in each unit. From high-end finishes and sound dampening technology, no detail has been overlooked. Envelope yourself in blissful solitude, while mere steps away from all the city has to offer.

Since his graduation with a Master of Architecture from the Tulane University School of Architecture in 1977, Rick has been a pioneer in historic preservation and urban redevelopment in the heart of downtown Kansas City, Missouri. He is a real estate developer and property manager who assembled two blocks of adjoining historic buildings, built between 1881 and 1931, containing 225,000 square feet with facilities to park over 300 vehicles. The area Rick has redeveloped into an adaptive mixed-use complex is known as Baltimore Place, owned and managed through a personal holding company, Athena Corporation, and its subsidiaries. The latest project to be completed is the mixed-use office-residential Union Carbide Condominiums.

Rick’s work has garnered several awards, including the Economic Development Corporation Cornerstone (‘88); City of Kansas City, MO - AIA/KC Urban Design (‘91); Building Owners and Managers (BOMA) Building of the Year, Historic (‘94); and Jackson County (MO) Historic Society Preservation (‘96).

Rick’s professional, civic and social memberships have included the American Institute of Architects; The Downtown Council (Director); Building Owners and Managers (Director); The Society of Fellows (Nelson/Atkins Museum of Art); Rotary Club 13; Kansas City Club /University Club (President 1995-97); Mercury Club (Director); Jackson County Historic Society; National Trust for Historic Preservation; Rockhill Homes Association (Director 80-84);

Rick also has been very active on many other not-for-profit boards including Historic Kansas City Foundation (Intern -’76, Director- ‘78-‘83); Boys and Girls Club of Kansas City (‘77-‘92); Kansas City Museum / Science City (‘80-’02) and its Executive Committee (‘89-‘00); and Kansas City Neighborhood Alliance (‘88-‘98); and the Tulane University Board of Administrators (’06-‘09).
